History

In the early 1970s, Renault began, first in France and then in other countries such as Germany, perform a racetrack racing series with the then very popular Renault 5. A new element was that the competition was advertised not for cars of different brands, for example, group 2 to engine capacity 1300 cm ³, but that went exclusively the cars from one manufacturer to the start.

Idea was that by putting the best driver and not a brand proved to be faster because of technical superiority - the technical superiority depending on the route also can change while in make cups a certain constancy is ensured.

As a precursor existed from 1966 to 1969 in France, a Renault Gordini Cup, attended the vehicles of the type R8 Gordini. The official name was " Renault 8 Gordini Cup ". However, this took place in less media attention.

As specified by the -make cup changes over the allowed one vehicle group (for example, group N) go, but do not reach the next higher Group A by far, the vehicles outside of their series are often a chance. Some of the vehicles are even not homologated for grassroots sport.

In a more open Discharge of a brand trophy candidates, the owner of the vehicle and for compliance with the regulations are responsible. In this variant of the purchase price (purchase price of the car ) is higher; the running costs are limited to material consumed ( in motorsport rather a broad term ) and the entry fee. This will almost always be charged for the entire season in advance. Of course, a team can take care of all logistics for several drivers.

In the more restrictive variant of a one make series, the vehicle remains with the manufacturer and is delivered by it to the track. Get the drivers for each race may be another vehicle. Here, no payment is due, but at a comparable level one years rent.

Sports and / or marketing

In some series of the brand trophy is a private business model to sell the exclusive racing car. For other manufacturers a PR remained at the fore, the above derives from the actual sport to areas such as lifestyle and emotional advertising.

The motorsport event series Beru Top 10 made many years a well known and rather broad athletic environment for many brand cups. High-priced series, however, are frequently found in the field of international automobile racing championships, so for example, start the Porsche Supercup, respectively, the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany regularly in the Framework Programme of the top Formula 1 or DTM series.
