Order of St. Sylvester

The New Year's Eve Order (Italian Ordine di San Silvestro Papa, Latin Ordo Sancti Silvestri Papae, Order of Pope St. Silvester ') is the fifth highest medal for services to the Roman Catholic Church. He is indirectly given by the Pope to lay persons for their outstanding service to the Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic works.

Foundation and Awards

Today's New Year's Order was probably founded by Pope Paul IV in 1559 on the basis of the Order of the Golden Spur. The appointed Equites auratae militiae bore the title Lateran Hofpfalzgrafen. This track allowed the Nuncios lend to 1815. The Order was reorganized by Pope Pius VII in 1815 and on 31 October 1841 by Pope Gregory XVI. renewed, expanded and renamed St. Silvester Medal. Pope Pius X renewed the Order with the Bull Multum excitandos on February 7, 1905 New Year's Eve back in the Order with regard to the Holy Sylvester I ( 314-325 ) and led the ceremony one to men and to women. The Order of the Pope is awarded for outstanding volunteer work in Catholic institutions and the basis of personal merit. It is the highest honor of the Holy Father, who forgives this sole, sovereign decision to lay Catholics.

The insignia of the Order of New Year's Eve are mainly based on those of the Order of the Golden Spur. The badge shows on an eight -pointed, golden and white enameled cross the image of Pope Sylvester I. The Order is worn on a black, triple red-rimmed band. Originally there was the Order in the three classes Knight, Commander and Grand Cross Knight. Since the reform of 1905, he is also to women (as "Lady " or " Dame Grand Cross " ) awarded, further comprising the step Commendatore was added with star with a dark blue background in the center plate.
