Orhan Veli Kanık

Orhan Veli ( from 1934: Orhan Veli KANIK; born April 13, 1914 in Istanbul, † November 14, 1950 ) was a Turkish poet and innovator of Turkish poetry.

During his high school years at Gazi Lisesi in Ankara, he learned Oktay Rifat and Melih Cevdet, with whom he founded ( foreign -like ) along the poets group Garip. Orhan Veli 1935 broke his studies in philosophy at the University of Istanbul not finish and worked subsequently in the post- office in Ankara. From 1942 to 1945 followed his military service, then he worked in the Translation Bureau of the Ministry of Education. He quit in 1947 because of an "anti- democratic environment ". From 1949 he edited the literary magazine Yaprak (leaf / leaves), in which he published his poems. He died on 14 November 1950, the consequences of a fall into a pit.

The name Garip expresses a break with the traditional, perceived as decadent style elements of Ottoman Turkish poetry. Stylistically, Orhan Veli's poems are characterized by the inclusion of vernacular as well as surrealistic elements. His best-known poem is " İstanbulu dinliyorum ", a tribute to his home city of Istanbul:

Orhan Veli is still one of the most popular Turkish poet; many of his poems were set to music in songs.
