Ormskirk is a market town in England in West Lancashire some 20 kilometers to the north of Liverpool and 30 km south of Preston. It counts 23 392 inhabitants (as of 2001) and is the administrative seat of the district of West Lancashire.

History

The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is Ormskirks oldest building. It is one of three churches in England who have a steeple with lace, and it is unique in that it has both a spire and a typical English defense tower at one end.

1286 the monks of the nearby monastery Burscough get the right ( Royal Charter ) by Edward I of England to hold a weekly market here. The market there is still twice a week on Thursday and Saturday.

Transport links

The main road is the A59 road that connects with Ormskirk Preston and Liverpool in the north to the south. The city is home to the northernmost station of the Merseyrail. Earlier this pathway was also associated with Skelmersdale.
