Orta San Giulio

Orta San Giulio ( Piedmontese and Lombard Orta ) is a municipality with 1155 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Novara (NO ), Region Piedmont.

Geography

Orta San Giulio is located on the eastern shore of Lake Orta (Lago d' Orta or Cusio ) on a protruding into the lake promontory and is an important tourist resort with a picturesque old town. Most citizens of the houses date from the time of the Renaissance and Baroque. The municipal area also includes the island of Isola San Giulio, the districts Corconio, Imolo and Legro.

Attractions

  • The main square of the town is the Piazza Motta, at the Creating the ships to Isola San Giulio. Since 1228, every Wednesday the weekly market takes place here. On the northern narrow side the former town hall is from 1582, now Palazotto della Comunitá.
  • On the east side of the square, the alley Salita della Motta rises at the upper end of the church of Santa Maria Assunta is enthroned. It was first built in 1485 and rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century.
  • Above the town rises a hill which is Sacro Monte d' Orta, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sacri Monti.
  • The district Legro is known as " painted village"; the walls of many houses are decorated with painted scenes from films that were shot in the area of Lake Orta.
