Oscar Dickson

Oscar Dickson ( born December 2, 1823 in Gothenburg, † June 6, 1897 at Good Almnäs at Hjo ) was a patron of the Swedish Polar Research. He made outstanding contributions to the Arctic trips Nordenskiöld.

1841 Dickson entered the office of Dickson & Comp. in Gothenburg, in 1846 he went into the Dickson Brothers & Comp. in London. He was since 1847 Booker for Dicksonschen possessions in Norrland, in 1850 partner of the firm in 1855 and returned back to Gothenburg.

Dickson was a member of learned societies and was appointed by the Uppsala University Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa in 1877. In 1880 he was raised to the peerage, as a Freemason in 1881 a member of the Royal Order of Knights Charles XIII. and finally in 1885 raised to the Barons. Rise to these awards was the rich financial support that made be granted especially the Arctic trips Nordenskiöld 1868, 1870, 1872, 1875 and 1878 and later various polar expeditions Dickson.

Oscar Dickson died on June 6, 1897 at his country seat at Almnäs Hjo.

According to him, the Russian island Dikson and Dickson Land was named in Svalbard.
