OsiriX

OsiriX is a software for visualization and processing of radiological DICOM image data. It runs under the operating system Mac OS X and was developed by the radiologist Antoine Rosset. It's 3D, 4D and 5D Post-processing and image fusion of PET and CT data possible. The open source software licensed under the GPL. The related iPhone / iPad application and various plugins are not open- source applications.

History

In the early 1990s, Osman Ratib dealt with the then young DICOM standard. He published the program Osiris as shareware DICOM viewer. In 2003, he worked as chairman at the University of California, Los Angeles ( UCLA) and Antoine Rosset took a one-year scholarship to Los Angeles. There she developed new OsiriX.

Worldwide, according to Rosset 40,000 users with OsiriX ( August 2009).

Motivation of developers

The free software OsiriX offers similar possibilities for image processing such as commercial available radiological post-processing workstations; However, these cost between 30,000 to 150,000 euros.

OsiriX Foundation

In 2008, the OsiriX Foundation was founded. You should as a foundation secure the continued existence of the project and the distribution of the software and give the possibility to provide for graduate students for further development.

Meetings

In the years 2005, 2006 and 2007 Users' Meeting took place in Chicago (RSNA ), 2008 in Vienna (ECR).

At the RSNA 2007 and 2008 OsiriX courses were offered by Apple, and also in September 2008 organized a OsiriX Apple Training in Cupertino.

Scope of the software

  • DICOM Storage SCP / SCU
  • DICOM Query / Retrieve SCP / SCU

OsiriX as a medical device

OsiriX is used only for private use or for research purposes. Detection and diagnosis of patients are therefore not permitted.

Software for the evaluation and post-processing of medical images is subject in most industrialized countries a regulatory control by the authorities or agencies thereof. In the EU Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC and is instrumental in the U.S. FDA 510 (k ) premarket notification prescribed.

The company aycan Digital Systems GmbH provides users in the U.S. and in the EU to an FDA -, CE-marked version with support and documentation. The project was subjected to a quality and risk management. The software is classified as a medical device class IIb in Germany and can thus be used for diagnosis in humans. This software is distributed in Austria by the company two- morrow dienstleistungs GmbH.
