Osmo Kaila

Osmo Ilmari Kaila ( born May 11, 1916 in Helsinki, † 3 June 1991) was a Finnish crossword puzzle inventor, chess player, chess composer and International Jury for chess composition.

Life

Osmo Kaila designed full-time crossword puzzle. In the mid- 1940s, Finland's first crossword puzzle was published, was responsible for the Osmo Kaila. His crosswords published until the late 1970s in newspapers Helsingin Sanomat like, the most widely circulated and influential newspaper in Finland in the 1980s, he also delivered to the Finnish magazine Suomen Kuvalehti photo.

Tournament chess

Kaila won in 1939 and 1954, the Individual Championship in Finland. In addition, he was three times runner (1947, 1951 and 1952 ) and third once (1945 ). All of these championships were held in Helsinki. The Nordic Championships 1939 in Oslo, he finished third behind Gideon Ståhlberg and Erik Lundin. In the first Nordic Championship after the war, which took place in Copenhagen in 1946, he was able to achieve victory.

With the Finnish national team, he participated in the countries Tournament 1936 in Munich, where he achieved a score of 13 points from 20 games on the seventh board. At the Chess Olympiad in Helsinki in 1952, he played on board three with a score of 6 out of 11, among others, with a win against Herbert Heinicke.

In 1952 he was awarded by the World Chess Federation FIDE the title of International Master.

Chess composition

In the first world championship of chess composition, he finished with Erkki Heinonen second place in the group G2 fairy chess. The task was " a reflection of Matt Two Züger with at least two different white self blocks from different fields or in the same field." He was also judges for the group G1 helpmate.

Since 1958 he was International Judge for Chess Composition. In 1990 he received the title of the PCCC FIDE Master of Chess Composition.
