The Osterbek is a creek in Hamburg. It rises in Farmsen -Berne and flows as " long train " in Alster Lake.

For large parts of the upper reaches of the Osterbek is straightened out today. The section between Turnierstieg and Berberweg was renatured in 2003, as a compensatory measure for environmental damage through building projects in other locations.

Near the Ship Model Basin opens the Seebek, coming from Bramfelder lake, in the Osterbek.

At the tunnel ramp of the underground the Osterbek is passed through a culvert.

From the Wachtelstraße the Osterbek is expanded as Osterbekkanal. The canal was built gradually from 1863 to 1912 and then moved major industrial estates after themselves. Examples are the rubber factory, on whose grounds are now home to the Museum of Work and the Kamp nail factory. No longer available are the electricity works at the Flotowstraße, the adjacent gas plant (now " Alster -City" ) and the incinerator on the Dulsberg.

The emissions from the construction of the canal masses of earth were used to build the embankments of the Stadtbahn, the elevated train and the freight bypass track.

In the upper part of the channel via the Barmbeker branch canal, a branch to Stadtparksee, which in turn is connected via the Goldbekkanal with the Alster Lake. This channel was created to supply the metro own power plant with coal. Since 1912 located at Osterbekkanal the Alster Shipyard, maintained in the still of the Alster steamer and repaired. Until 1984 there was a Steamship Line Transport ( line: " blue flag " ) with investors on Mühlerkamp, Bachstraße and Saarlandstraße. Before the Second World War barges drove as connecting traffic from the larger steamers between Mühlenkamp and the Stadtparksee. Since the 1930s the industrial enterprises began to migrate, displaced by the expanding residential development, lack of Ausweitungsmögichkeit the factory premises and structural change.

Fish fauna

One of the dominant fish species in one to two meters deep Osterbekkanal include roach, bream, perch and pike in places under jetties or seawalls weathered. Eels find ideal living conditions at the muddy channel base and in the holes on the river walls. Especially the Long train and into the pond rose fields, carp and tench occur, especially where walkers water birds feeding with bread. Smaller flocks of Alanden and consuming asp can be observed especially in the summer months at the water surface.

Formerly called the Osterbek Bernebeke ( small stream ) and gave the district its name Barmbek. 1571 came to the Osterbek to a battle between Winterhude and Barmbek the Winterhuder common pasture. The district office of the North is planning another restoration measure by creating a natural river course of Osterbek at the height Lämmersieth to Wachtelstraße in a feasibility study. In addition, biking and hiking trails along the banks of Osterbek are planned.
