Otsego Lake (New York)

The Otsego Lake is a small lake in Otsego County in the U.S. state of New York.

He is one of the sources of the Susquehanna River, the longest river on North America's east coast. The lake is geologically to the Finger Lakes, but is not counted to them in general. The lake has a length of 14.5 km and a width of 1 to 2.5 km. At the southern end of the lake is the small town of Cooperstown, which was founded by William Cooper, the father of writer James Fenimore Cooper and the he was born and died. Near the village there is the Kingfisher Tower on the eastern shore of the lake. Is the Glimmerglass State Park on the north east coast of the lake.

The name Otsego is derived from an Indian word meaning " Place of the Rock " from.

Literary scene

The lake was known by Cooper's Leatherstocking novels in which he named the lake " Glimmerglass ." Especially in the novels The Deerslayer and The settlers formed the lake the Handlungsort. Some still visible landmarks of the lake as the Council skirt and the Islands Sunken find in the novels mention.
