Otto Gildemeister

Otto Gildemeister ( born March 13, 1823 in Bremen, † August 26 1902 in Bremen) was a journalist, writer, translator, liberal- conservative politician, senator and mayor of Bremen.

Biography

The son of the Bremen Senator Johann Carl Friedrich Gildemeister and brother of the architect Charles Gildemeister began as a student doing translations of classic Greek, Roman, English, French and Italian poetry into German, for example, works of Aeschylus, Horace, Tibullus, Shakespeare, Byron, Ariosto and Dante. Beginning in 1842, studied guild masters in Berlin, in 1844 he was in Bonn, then again in Berlin. In 1845 he returned to Bremen, where he took a job as editor of the literary arts section of the Weser -Zeitung. From 1850 he worked here in a managerial position. 1852 began his political career with his appointment as secretary and archivist of the Bremen Senate.
