Otto Marseus van Schrieck

Otto van Marseus Schrieck (c. 1619/20 in Nijmegen, † 1678 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch still life painter.

Life and work

Little is known about the origin and formation of Marseus van Schrieck. In 1648 he went, accompanied by the painter Mattheus Withoos to Italy, where he worked for the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinand II de Medici. There he met Willem van Aelst, with whom he became friends. Starting no later than 1652, he worked in Rome and member of the Dutch painters' guild " Schildersbent ". In 1657 he came up with Willem van Aelst back to Holland and settled in Amsterdam. He also traveled through England and France.

He had a special fondness for colorful insects and reptiles, which he kept in terrariums and like immortalized on his works. The search for this beast gave him the nickname " Snuffelaer " (Eng. sniffer ).

Malte first he especially lush flower bouquets, he turned from the 1660s, especially scenes from the small animal world. It is this later work helped him to fame and lasting recognition.
