Oulun Kärpät

Oulu Kärpät or simply Kärpät ( German: Ermine ) is a Finnish professional ice hockey club that plays in Oulu in Oulu Energia Areena.

History

On May 15, 1946 Kärpät was founded in Oulu under the name Oulu Kärpät 46. First football was played in the sports club. As the first winter sport followed Bandy.

In January 1947, the ice hockey team of the association was founded. Although initially not very successful, put Kärpät from then on his focus on hockey.

When the SM- liiga was established in 1975, played Kärpät still in the 1st Division, but in 1977 managed the leap into the top league in Finland and celebrated in 1980 with a bronze medal the first major success in this league. Already in the 1980-81 season Kärpät was for the first time Finnish champion.

In 1995 Kärpät had to go in the 1st division play, but increased in 2000 and again in the SM- liiga.

In the years 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008 they were finally re- Finnish champion, and in 2006 and 2009 third runner-up.
