Oyster Bay is a town in the east of Nassau County on Long Iceland in the U.S. state of New York.

History

The Town was originally ( at the latest in 1640) part of New Amsterdam. In 1667 they became independent in the wake of the dissolution of Nieuw Nederland. By 1898, she served on the Queens County, then broke up but at the crossing to New York City along with Hempstead, North Hempstead, Glen Cove and Long Beach in the newly formed Nassau County.

Geography

The Town of Oyster Bay is located on Long Iceland and extends from Long Iceland Sound south to South Oyster Bay and the open Atlantic Ocean. To the west lie adjacent the other two Towns of Nassau County, North Hempstead and south of Hempstead. In addition, the urban area surrounds in the northwest of the City of Glen Cove, Glen Cove without that would belong to Oyster Bay. The eastern boundary of Oyster Bay forms the border between Nassau and Suffolk County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 439 km ², of which 270 km ² of land and 169 km ² omitted ( = 38.42 %) to water. The landscape corresponds to the prevailing on Long Iceland Distribution: The North Shore is mostly hilly, on the southern shore prevail sandy beaches before, and in between there is a plane.

The figures of Census 1990 and Census 2000 are not directly comparable because the Town has exchanged regions with both Hempstead (Nassau County) as well as with Babylon ( Suffolk County). In addition ceded territories to the Oyster Bay Town of Huntington in Suffolk County.
