Pacific Steam Navigation Company

The Pacific Steam Navigation Company ( PSNCo ) was a British shipping company based in Liverpool using a regular service from the UK to the west coast of South America (Chile, Peru, Ecuador) entertained. The line gained special importance for the supply of that region.

History

1838 founded the American William Wheelwright, the shipping company Pacific Steam Navigation Company, to establish on the west coast of South America, a shipping line. Chile granted the company for exclusive rights, which accelerated the economic rise of the young company. By 1920, the cruise line kept this kind of monopoly. The scheduled service this time led by Valparaiso on Callao and Guayaquil to Panama and back.

Opened in 1850, the PSNCo in association with the Orient Line a regular service to Australia and New Zealand. In 1868 the shipping company decided to do a direct connection from the UK to set up the west coast of South America. The line connection was Liverpool (Bordeaux ) - ( Corunna) - Lisbon - Rio de Janeiro - Montevideo - Buenos Aires - Valparaíso. 1904 nor Port Stanley ( Falkland Islands) and Coronel were inserted in this connection.

The company grew to become one of the leading shipping companies in the South American business, but had to fight soon with increasing economic problems. 1877 pulled the PSNCo from the Australia service with the Orient Line back and sold four of their steamers to the former partner. But from the Orient Line the PSNCo took over the tradition that the names of all large passenger ships of the line began with the letter O.

1910 PSNCo was bought by the British Royal Mail Group. Provided with more funds began the shipping company to modernize its fleet and expand. 1914 came with the Orduna and orbit the first ships of the company with more than 10,000 GRT in service.

In 1920, the PSNCo a new line of service, which incorporated the 1915 Panama Canal opened. The line connection was Liverpool or New York City (Bermuda ) - ( Bahamas ) - ( Jamaica) - Panama - Guayaquil -Lima - Callao - Valparaíso. The airline service around Cape Horn but was still operated.

1931 was forced to declare bankruptcy, the Royal Mail Group as a result of the global economic crisis. 1933 reorganized as a Royal Mail Line, they now formed together with the PSNCo a composite (RML / PSNCo - Group). In 1965, the group was bought by the British shipping company Furness, Withy & Co.. 1970 all ships of the company were transferred to the Royal Mail Line, but the PSNCo remained active at least as a manager. 1980 bought the Hong Kong Chinese C.Y. Tung the Furness, Withy group, and in the course of the 1980s PSNCo gradually lost their identity and heard in 1985 as an active company to exist.

The Pacific Steam Navigation Co. was one of the many victims of the containerization of world shipping, but also to the poor economic situation of their parent company, the Furness Withy Group and the bad situation in the British shipping in the late 1960s and early 1970s generally.

Since 1990, the naming rights lie at the PSNCo in the German shipping company Hamburg Süd.
