The Pajala Airport ( IATA: PJA, ICAO: SEDP ) is an airport located near Pajala, a place ( tätort ) in the northern Swedish province Norrbotten County, near the Finnish border. The official name of the airport is flygplats Pajala - Yllas Airport, formerly Pajala. The Yllas in the name refers to a Finnish ski resort in nearby Yllästunturi.

History

In October 1984, the municipality of Pajala appointed a commission to plan an airport in the region, after three companies had settled from the electronics or computer industry in Pajala. With the construction of the airport, however, was only 15 years later, started at the beginning of 1999. On 15 September 1999, the airport was opened by King Carl Gustaf. At the opening of the airport was a start and runway of 1420x30 meters. This was extended from 1420x30 to 2300x45 meters in 2007.

Flights

Regular flights are to Luleå Airport around 240 km away. The flight time is 35 to 40 minutes.
