Palana

Palana (Russian Палана ) is an urban-type settlement in the region of Kamchatka (Russia) with 3155 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is in the northwest of the Kamchatka Peninsula, on the right bank of the same river Palana, about eight kilometers above its confluence with the Shelikof Bay of the Okhotsk Sea, at the foot of in the immediate hinterland rising to about 300 meters altitude mountains. Palana is located about 700 km ( straight line ) north of the regional capital Petropavlovsk -Kamchatsky.

The place is located is surrounded by the territory of Rajons Tigil, but forms a rajonfreien, independent urban district.

History

The well-known since 1876 village whose Koryak and Russian residents of fishing, hunting and gathering berries and wild herbs lived was, since 1937, the center was founded in 1930 Autonomous Okrug Koryak after the administration was moved there from the traffic- unfavorable village Kamenskoje.

During the 20th century, the industrial fisheries and fish processing developed. 1962, the status of an urban-type settlement was awarded.

Palana remained the administrative center of the Autonomous Okrug, until it was incorporated on 1 July 2007 with the Kamchatka Oblast to the new eponymous region.

Culture and sights

In Palana there since 1991, a history museum focusing on the history and culture of the indigenous population, the Koryak, Itelmens, Evens and Chukchi, as well as the nature of the area.

Economy and infrastructure

In addition to the fishing industry, however, is in crisis since the 1990s, Palanas mainly plays the role of a supply and cultural center for the entire northeastern coast area of ​​the Okhotsk Sea today.
