Pallavaram (Tamil: பல்லாவரம் Pallāvaram [ pal ː a ː ʋəɾʌm ], also Pallavapuram ) is a city in the suburb area of Chennai (Madras ), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The population is around 215,000 ( 2011 census ).

Pallavaram is located approximately 20 kilometers southwest of the city of Chennai and four kilometers southwest of the airport Chennai inland from the coast of the Gulf of Bengal. The city belongs to the Alandur taluk of Kanchipuram district and is part of the metropolitan region of Chennai. In Pallavaram rises from the otherwise flat environment, a single rock, the Pallavaram Hill. Also located in Pallavaram Periya Eri the lake ( " Great Lake "). The lake was once measured 76 hectares, but has significantly reduced by increasing environmental degradation. The leading southwest National Highway 45 ( Grand Southern Trunk Road), one of the main arterial roads of Chennai, runs through Pallavaram. In addition, the city on the southwestern line Chennaier suburban train (Chennai Suburban Railway) is connected to the city center.

In Pallavaram a stone tool was found in 1864 from the Lower Palaeolithic, which represents one of the earliest evidence of human occupation of India. The name derives from Pallavaram Pallavapuram ( " Pallava City " ) and refers to the Pallava dynasty, which reigned from the 6th to the 9th century by the nearby Kanchipuram from across the region. At the Pallava period is remembered by a cave temple from the time of King Mahendravarman I. ( 600-630 ), who later in a Dargah ( Muslim Sufi shrine ) was converted. During the British colonial era in 1882 in a garrison Pallavaram ( Pallavaram Cantonment ) was founded as an expansion of the garrison at nearby St. Thomas Mount.
