Pallenis hierochuntica

Pallenis hierichuntica

Pallenis hierichuntica ( often written " hierochuntica " ) is a plant from the sunflower family ( Asteraceae). It is native of North Africa and the Middle East.

The opening of the fructification by moistening has occasionally led to confusion with the Rose of Jericho.

Description

Pallenis hierichuntica is an annual, prostrate growing, usually nearly stemless and unbranched or weakly branched herbaceous plant that plant height usually only a few, but occasionally reaching up to 15 centimeters. The upright stem is smooth to striated shaggy hairy, later glabrous.

The 14-105 mm long and 2.5 to 10 mm wide leaves are spatulate to obovate oblong- round, narrowed considerably at the base and at the extremity of very small mucronate. Initially hairy tomentose, later they are almost raw and are slightly glandular.

The flowering period extends from March to May, depending on location but can also include the period from January to July. The person sitting in the crotches of branches of the stem axis baskets are nearly sessile to short-stalked and with a size similar to that of Involucrums greater than the baskets further outside.

The involucre is 3-18 mm wide, wide bell - to - bell-, rarely urn -shaped. The 10 to 20 bracts are in one or two leaf circles. The hairy tomentose to slightly rough outer bracts are spatulate to narrowly oblong- round, rounded at the outer end to obtuse and mucronate very small. You are strong, flat folded up along the midrib and with 14.3 to 32.5 millimeters in length from 1.7 to 5.5 millimeters in width, significantly longer than the florets. The laterally often purplish inner bracts 4 to 12.5 millimeters long and 2.3 to 4.7 mm wide, slightly hairy on the outer end and very small mucronate. The oblong- round, at the outer end pointed and occasionally fluffy hairy chaff leaves are 3.2 to 5.3 mm long and 0.9 to 1.7 millimeters wide, its lateral edges are bent.

The cream-colored 9-23 ray florets are single row, almost upright to slightly spread. The weak glandular and along the Vein as the tongue slightly fluffy hairy tube is 0.6 to 1.5 mm long and 0.5 to 0.9 mm wide. The obround to wrong - egg-shaped tongues are six annoying, slightly glandular, hairy slightly fluffy and 2.7 to 5.9 mm long and 1.4 to 2.5 millimeters wide. The Corolla lobe are deeply notched and pointed. The pistil 2 to 3.3 millimeters long, staminodes are very small or absent. The densely bristly achenes are triangular, its corners rounded, 1 to 1.9 mm long and 0.7 to 1.2 millimeters wide. Composed of six to eight pointed at the extremity of dandruff flakes Pappus resembles a crown and reaches a length of 0.9 to 1.6 millimeters.

The crowns of 40 to 200 tubular flowers are 2.2 to 3.2 mm long and 0.6 to 1.0 mm wide, the Corolla lobe are either smooth or have the back on a few tiny glands. The dust bags are 0.8 to 1.6 millimeters long and arrowhead-shaped, the stylus from 1.9 to 3.4 millimeters long. The densely bristly achenes are 1.2 to 1.9 mm long, 0.4 to 0.8 millimeters wide, four-sided to approximately cylindrical in outline, and vice versa - ovate to oblong- round. The pappus is similar to those of the ray flower, but is composed of eight to ten dandruff flakes and 1 to 1.6 millimeters long.

The fruiting plant is ash-gray, the button-shaped basket. The fruit stand is incurved. At this time the involucre with dryness is closed and only opens by moistening ( Hygrochasie ).

As chromosome numbers were 2n = 10 and 2n = 12 reported.

Occurrence

Pallenis hierichuntica than saharo Arab Florenelement native of Fuerteventura over the whole of North Africa and the Middle East ( there in Iran and West Pakistan ) and comes in steppes and deserts from sea level to 1500 meters before.

Systematics and Botanical History

Pallenis hierichuntica was discovered in 1851 by Louis Felicien de Saulcy the outskirts of Jericho, and in his honor in 1852 (not 1854) hierichuntica first described by his companion and friend Jean -Hippolyte Michon in one of botanists long overlooked publication as Saulcya, but has since been mostly as Asteriscus pygmaeus ( DC.) Coss. & Durieu cited. This name already existed since 1839 in Varietätsrang (as Asteriscus aquaticus var pygmaeus DC. ), But was not brought until 1853 in the species rank and is therefore not entitled to priority. In 1985, Annette Wiklund then as Asteriscus hierichunticus ( Michon ) Wiklund on, and corrected this mistake in the epithet " hierochunticus ", a notation often used. As part of the nomenclatural revision of the genus by Werner Greuter 1997, she was then transferred together with other species in the genus Pallenis. Subsequent molecular analyzes confirmed this classification. As the closest related applies Pallenis maritima.
