Palm Treo
Treo is originally a family of smartphones based on Palm OS based on the company Handspring. Following the merger of Handspring by Palm, Inc. palmOne, the development was carried out under the direction of palmOne (now again under the name Palm). Newer Treo models from this time use next to the house Palm OS and Windows Mobile operating system.
Treo 90
The Treo 90 was the last "pure" Organizer by Handspring (no phone). He offered the first device after the prism again a color display, this time with 4096 colors. Thanks to a slightly smaller screen size and weight of the PDA could be reduced: at 113 grams 10.8 cm × 7.1 cm × 1.6 cm. Treo 180/180g
The devices Treo 180 and 180g published in early 2002. These had a built-in dual-band GSM mobile phone. While the Treo 180 took the step towards a small but complete keyboard, the 180 g of "conservative " Graffiti users came from without. This was reflected among other things in weight (140 grams instead of 147 grams at 180 ) noticeable, but not in the dimensions (both 10.8 cm × 7.1 cm × 2.1 cm). The equipment with Palm OS 3.5.2H4, 16 shades of gray at 160 × 160 pixels, 33 MHz CPU and lithium -ion battery corresponded to previous PDAs. Outstanding, however, were the telephony features that Handspring integrated - even a hands-free, there was in the first Treo smartphone. The 180 series of Treos were the first available in Germany Palm OS smartphones. Quality problems ( defects in workmanship, high failure rate ) prevented the breakthrough of smart phones, also could not be found partners at major mobile operators - for announcements of pages Viag Intercom were not implemented. GPRS works out of the house yet, but was later re-stocked Handspring as a free update.
Treo 270/300
The Treo 270 corresponded to the performance of her where about a quarter of a previously published Treo 180, but came with the monitor screen, which found 90 used in the Treo. Except for a about 5 grams heavier weight than the 180er hardly any differences are noted. The devices, however, were equipped with a powerful battery, so the time for the change from black and white to color screen not as was customary deteriorated, but much improved. The version of the Treo 300 was a CDMA2000 model and thus uninteresting for the German market. Also for the Treo 270 no mobile network partner could be found. The production of the Treo 270 was discontinued in the summer of 2004, and the support is still suffering under the right after merger, Handspring Palm to palmOne: support pages no longer exist or be redirected to the homepage by palmOne, the SDKs for software developers are difficult to find, etc.
Treo 500/500v
The Treo 500v is the first and only Palm device without touch screen. It has a QWERTY keyboard and runs on the operating system Windows Mobile 6 Standard. Treo 600
The last unit of Handspring at all should be a smartphone again. In contrast to all other models of the Treo line of Treo 600 had no door and ran on Palm OS 5 ( Garnet, more precisely 5.2.1H ) the Treo 600 almost anywhere in the world is used as a quad -band mobile phone. As the first smartphone from Handspring it offered an SD expansion slot, as it otherwise only the Treo 90 has (see above). 32 MB RAM and 144 MHz processor made for significantly shorter latency when switching between applications and when typing. The five- way navigator simplified the operation, with the integrated digital camera can nevertheless make Snapshots (or, for example, measure the ambient light and adjust accordingly the backlight ). With 168 grams of the Treo 600 was not a lightweight, but was due to the round housing comfortably in the hand. Dimensions: 11.2 cm × 6 cm × 2.2 cm, after all, Handspring could make the device so narrow. Due to enormously high prices and very late introduction in Europe also this device, the big breakthrough was denied. Technically, he could not quite keep up with the latest devices of competition; so also lacked the Treo 600 is a high-resolution display and a built-in bluetooth interface ( the exchange of data had to be done via USB cable). These deficiencies have been rectified to the successor Treo 650, but already appeared under the direction of palmOne.
Treo 650
The Treo 650 is since the fourth quarter of 2004 in the USA on the market (sales by the end of 2004, only by the U.S. telephone company Sprint Nextel ) and has, in contrast to its predecessors, among others, a high-resolution display (320 × 320 pixels), Bluetooth support, EDGE, non-volatile RAM ( NVFS ), a faster 312 MHz processor and improved VGA digital camera. In the U.S., a CDMA2000 version of the Treo 650 is available.
In Germany, the apparatus has been on the market since 10 March 2005. After the performance of the device in an article on Golem.de had initially been long speculated whether the smartphone would be ever offered by one of the four German mobile network operators. Since the summer of 2005, the Treo 650 was then to get e -Plus.
Because the smartphone contains substances that are no longer allowed after already adopted in January 2003 European RoHS regulation, it may no longer be marketed since July 1, 2006 in Europe. This prohibition does not remain only old stocks.
The administration of the newly introduced non-volatile memory means NVFS made directly after the launch for negative headlines ( Heise Newsticker ): much less efficient than the nominally equivalent equipped predecessor Treo 600 Treo 650 stored data, so that was less memory available for the user. Palm thereupon brought in a number of purchases a 128 MB SD card in and finally put a patch ready that solved the problem permanently.
Treo 680
The Treo 680 was introduced on 12 October 2006 as a low-end model. It has the following data:
Visually similar to the smartphone the 750v ( ie, in particular without the antenna stub ); Also, it is available ( at least in the United States) in four colors. Although it was not presented as a successor to the Treo 650, Treo 680 after the sale stop the 650s in Europe ( see above) will be considered as his successor. Most changes are of a visual nature, exceptions include the larger memory, Bluetooth 1.2 instead of 1.1 and the optical improvements. Unfortunately, the battery life is far behind that of the Treo 650 - even after a software update. The principle should be addressed, who had not bought until now no smartphone or wanted to buy with the Treo 680 customers.
As criticisms after the presentation of the WLAN and UMTS support were missing ( not retrofittable) called; Moreover, it is striking that Palm continued to use the PalmOS 5. Here, however, must not be forgotten that WLAN and UMTS were hardly available in a smartphone so far and the PalmOS against the original version has been significantly expanded.
Beginning of 2008 was provided by Palm, a firmware update for the Treo 680. This updated several components of the operating system. In most cases, results from the update improved battery life and reliability of the device. In addition, some previously released updates and patches were taken as support for Direct Push with Exchange Active Sync accounts in the email client.
Immediately after the Treo 680 Update to version 2.12 introduced the Palm Centro for GSM networks on the market. This essentially provides the functionality of the Treo 680, but in a much smaller package.
Treo 700w
The Treo 700w was presented on 25 September 2005 and has since January 5, 2006 in the U.S. mobile communications provider Verizon available. In contrast to the other Treo models he is so far only available in a version for the American CDMA2000 network. It is unclear if ever a GSM variant will be available. As the first organizer of the Palm Treo 700w Windows Mobile 5.0 used instead of Palm OS. Centro
On 27 September 2007 Palm introduced in the United States in front of the Centro. There is a nearly identical with the Treo 680 device, except that it is slightly smaller and the camera offers a higher resolution. In Germany, the Palm Centro is available since March 2008. In particular, the software has not changed significantly, but the map service Google Maps is included. Because the Centro but has no WiFi, it is a position determination (except via external GPS receiver ) can only perform based on GSM radio towers.
