Palmer Archipelago

The Palmer Archipelago (English Antarctic Archipelago, and Archipelago Palmer, Antarktiske Arkipel or Palmer Islands) is an archipelago in the Antarctic, on the northwest coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It extends from Iceland in the north to the Tower of Brabant, Anvers and Wiencke Island in the south. The Gerlache Strait and the Bismarck - road separate the archipelago.

History

Adrien de Gerlache, Head of the Belgica expedition from 1897 to 1899, discovered the archipelago in 1898. He named it after the U.S. sealers Nathaniel Palmer, who saw one of the first to Antarctica on 17 November 1820.

Research Station in Palmer Archipelago

The Palmer Station is a permanent Antarctic station of the USA on Anvers Island. The Chilean Yelcho station is located on the Doumer island south of Anvers Island. On the small Goudier Island off the coast of Wiencke Island and on the Wiencke Island in Jougla Point was located from 1944 to 1962, the British research station Port Lockroy, which is now visited by cruise ships and in summer by members of the British Antarctic Heritage Trust operated post office houses. Port Lockrot has no status as a station anymore, but as a museum today.
