Paolo Veneziano

Paolo Veneziano ( * before 1333; † after 1358; Paolo da Venezia ) was a Venetian painter of the late Middle Ages.

Paolo Veneziano came from a Venetian family of artists. He worked in a workshop together with his sons Marco, Luca and Giovanni, who occasionally signed works together with Paolo. He signed his works Paulus.d. Veneciis. Under the Doge Andrea Dandolo, he was the official court painter. On behalf of Andrea Dandolo, he painted the Pala Pala d' oro Feriale for San Marco, a picture board with scenes from the life of St. Mark, which covered the Pala d' oro on working days.

Typical of Paolo Veneziano was clinging to the Byzantine tradition of painting, together with the processing of Gothic styles. In his paintings, no effects of the coming of the early Renaissance Florence painting can be seen as it was to see, for example, near Venice during his lifetime in the extended painted by Giotto Scrovegni Chapel in Padua.
