Papyrus 1

Papyrus 1 ( in the Gregory- Aland numbers 1) is an early copy of the New Testament in Greek. It is a papyrus manuscript of the Gospel of Matthew, and is dated to the 3rd century. It is currently kept in the museum of the University of Pennsylvania under the signature E 2746. It was discovered in Oxyrhynchus in Egypt. The manuscript is a fragment of a leaf, folded so that two sides arise with one column per page. On each side there are 27-29 rows, the dimensions are approximately 14.7 cm x 15 cm. Still preserved is the text from Matthew 1,1-9.12 and 13, 14-20. Using palaeography, it has been dated to the early 3rd century.

The Greek of the Code can be assigned to the Alexandrian text-type. Aland placed it in Category I.

1 follows the text of Codex Vaticanus. Most deviations are found in the pronunciation of the name in the lineage of Jesus.

Bernard Pyne Grenfell and Arthur Surridge Hunt discovered the Papyrus Oxyrhynchus in Egypt in the second day of the excavations in the winter 1896-1897. Their findings were published in the first volume of The Oxyrhynchus papyri in 1898.
