Papyrus 53

(Referred to Gregory- Aland Sigel 53) Papyrus 53 is an early copy of the Greek New Testament. It is a papyrus manuscript containing fragments of the Gospel of Matthew ( Matt 26.29-40 ) and the book of Acts (Acts 9.33 to 10.1 ). Using palaeography, it has been dated to the 3rd century. The two fragments were found together and were once part of a codex containing the four Gospels with the Acts or only Matthew and Acts.

Text

The Greek text of this codex is a representative of the Alexandrian text-type (or rather a proto- Alexandrian ). Aland described him as " at least normal text" and placed it in Category I.

The manuscript is currently housed in the University of Michigan under the inventory number 6652 in Ann Arbor.
