Parliament House (Brisbane)

The Parliament House in Brisbane is the seat of the Parliament of Queensland. It is located on George Street, corner of Alice Street in the immediate vicinity of the Queensland University of Technology and the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens.

History

When in 1859 the colony of Queensland from New South Wales seceded, found the meetings of the newly established Parliament temporarily at premises of Old Convict Barracks in Queen Street instead. These facilities had sufficient initially, as the Queensland Government issued the its available financial resources for the establishment of the Government House. In 1863 they selected a design for a new parliament building in a competition. With the construction finally began in 1864. The front on George Street, which has the style of the French Renaissance, was completed in 1868. The colonnades were built in 1878 and the establishment of the front at the Alice Street was started in 1887. In 1889 the building was completed.
