Parmelia (lichen)

Parmelia sulcata

Parmelia is the largest genus of leaf lichens with 50-1322 species worldwide.

Description

Parmelia is inconsistent in itself, and an attempt is made to divide it into smaller genera. Generally accepted is the separation of the genera Cetrelia, Hypogymnia, Menegazzia and Pseudevernia. The genera mentioned are difficult to distinguish from the laity. Confusion with other genera are also possible. The difficulty in the description of the genus is characterized by the fact that in at least European identification keys ( eg Jahns ) Parmelia remains after all other leaf lichens were discarded due to special features. Parmelia generally has a darker underside rhizines at which the braid is attached to the substrate. The top can be gray, yellow or brown, often with dissemination organs. These can be both apothecia, isidia or Soralia. The medulla, which houses the algae partner of lichen is located between the top and bottom.

Occurrence

Parmelia species are found worldwide, from the Arctic to the Antarctic but focusing in temperate climates. 125 species have been described from the Indian subcontinent.
