Pat Binns

George Patrick " Pat" Binns ( born October 8, 1948 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian politician and diplomat. He was Prime Minister from 1996 to 2007 the province of Prince Edward Iceland and during that time chairman of the Prince Edward Iceland Progressive Conservative Party. Since 30 August 2007, he is Ambassador of Canada to Ireland.

Binns studied urban development at the University of Alberta and moved in 1972 to Prince Edward Iceland. In 1978 he was elected a deputy of the Legislative Assembly and was among Angus MacLean and James Lee provincial minister in the fields of industry, communities, fisheries, environment and labor. From 1984 to 1988 he was in the Canadian House of Commons.

1996 Binns was elected chairman of the Progressive Conservatives and joined after the elections on 18 November 1996, in which his party won 18 of 27 seats, to the Office of the Prime Minister of Prince Edward Iceland and sparked Keith Milligan from. Because of his easy and not overbearing manner, he was very popular. His political objectives included the preservation of rural structures of Prince Edward Iceland and the promotion of SMEs.

In the elections on 17 April 2000 and on 29 September 2003 Binns was confirmed. At the end of his third term, he was now the longest-serving prime minister of a province in Canada, he would be seeking a fourth term of office. However, Binns party suffered on May 28, 2007, a painful defeat. He could keep his constituency, but was forced to cede the premiership to Robert Ghiz of Prince Edward Iceland Liberal Party. After his appointment as Ambassador Binns resigned as deputy and chairman of the party.
