Paul Cosgrove

Paul James Cosgrove PC QC (born 30 December 1934 in Thunder Bay, Ontario ) is a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada, who was a Member of the House of Commons, Minister and 1984-2009 Judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice some time.

Life

After schooling Cosgrove graduated, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. Another study of law, he finished with a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ) and then took up a career as a lawyer.

His political career began in local politics and was 1973-1978 Mayor of Scarborough, the eastern part of the city of Toronto. Cosgrove was a candidate for the Liberal Party, both at a by-election on 16 October 1978 as well as in the general election of May 22, 1979, respectively unsuccessfully in constituency York - Scarborough for a seat in the House. In the subsequent general election on 18 February 1980, he was elected as a deputy and represented the constituency of York - Scarborough until his mandate waiver on 9 July 1984 at the House of Commons. During his membership of the House of Commons he was on 14 April 1980 to 9 July 1984 Co - Chairman of the Joint Special Committee of the Parliament of Canada for the reform of the Senate.

On 3 March 1980 Cosgrove was appointed by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in the 22 Canadian cabinet and took this to 29 September 1982, the Office of the Minister of Public Works. At the same time he was 3 March 1980 to 5 October 1982, Minister with responsibility for the National Capital Commission and Minister with responsibility for the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation). Subsequently, he was still between 30 September 1982 to August 11, 1983 Minister of State for Finance.

After retiring from the House, he was appointed on 9 July 1984 by Prime Minister John Turner, who was on 30 June 1984 became successor Trudeau, a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. This judicial office he held until his resignation on 2 April 2009.

His resignation was preceded by a multi-year dispute over his eligibility because of a judicial murder proceedings from 2003. The then competent Attorney General of Ontario, Michael Bryant, threw Cosgrove before, to soil the reputation of the judicial office and denigrated the state. He got first for his former behavior and legal support from the Criminal Chamber of the Federal Court of Canada, while later, the Appellate Division of the Federal Court of Canada ruled against him. After initially on 4 December 2008 was going to ask the then Justice Minister Cosgrave to discharge a committee of the Canadian Judicial Council, ultimately called for the entire Magistracy on 31 March 2009, the dismissal from his post.
