Paul (exarch)

Paul († 726/27 ) was an East Roman Patricius, Strategus of Sicily and Exarch of Ravenna to 726 / 727th

Paul was a confidant of Emperor Leon III. , From which he was sent in 718 to Sicily. There he was to quash the uprising of Sergius, who had Basil Onomagulos proclaimed rival emperor. On this occasion, he was named Patricius and strategists of Sicily. When it in the first half of the twenties because of the increased tax assets Leon III. in Italy came to resistance, which was supported by the pope, Paul seems to Exarch of Italy appointed and to have been sent to Ravenna.

On the orders of the Emperor Paul was trying to kill Pope Gregory II or to arrest, but this failed and, as the Liber Pontificalis reported in Italy led to a new wave uprising and a further erosion of Byzantine rule. Paul himself was occupied by the Pope with the anathema. It was 726/727 killed when he tried to submit to the orders of Emperor Ravenna, which obviously was in revolt.
