Paul " Paulie" Malignaggi ( born November 23, 1980 in New York City ) is an American professional boxer of Italian descent, former IBF world light welterweight champion, and former WBA welterweight champion.

Amateur career

The son of Sicilian immigrants began at the age of 16 years with the sport of boxing. He won in 1998 and 2001, the New York Golden Gloves, and in 2000 the bronze medal at the National Police Athletic League ( PAL). In the U.S. Junior Championships in 1999 and the National Golden Gloves in 2000, he reached the quarter -finals.

2001 Malignaggi won the gold medal in the lightweight, at the U.S. Championships in Colorado Springs.

Professional career

On 7 July 2001, he earned his first prizefighting and won by KO in the first round. Even in his next 20 fights he remained unbeaten; thereby defeating, among others, Kevin Watts (18-2 ), Roman Martinez ( 40-9 ) and Ramiro Cano (18-1 ). On 4 December 2004, he won early against Sandro Casa Monica ( 34-4 ) and became an International Master of the WBC light welterweight. After a points victory against Jeremy Yelton (16-1 ), he won on February 10, 2006, nor the American Continental Championship title the WBC, with dots victory against Donald Camarena (16-1 ).

On June 10, 2006, he received the Madison Square Garden of New York City, a world title fight WBO light welterweight. In the fight against the undefeated titlist Miguel Cotto ( 26-0, 22 Ko) Malignaggi had in the second round for the first time in his professional career to the ground, suffered a severe Cutverletzung the left eye and a broken cheekbone. After the full twelve rounds Cotto was declared the winner by unanimous decision and defended his championship belt with it for the sixth time in a row.

In February 2007, he defeated Edner Cherry ( 21-4 ), who later became world title challenger Timothy Bradley. On 16 June 2007 he was allowed to fight in Uncasville for the world title of the IBF light welterweight, winning by unanimous decision against Lovemore N'dou ( 45-8 ). N'dou moved in the fight against boxtechnisch superior Malignaggi almost all the stops. So he moved, for example, the window display, was admonished in the third, fifth, sixth and eleventh round for irregular blows to the kidneys and the back of the head and punished with point deduction, he also went in Round 9 to the ground.

In January 2008, Malignaggi defended his world title against Cameroon -born Canadians Herman Ngoudjo (16-1 ) by unanimous decision. In May 2008, he played a rematch against Lovemore N'dou he could win after twelve rounds only slightly by majority decision ( split decision ). Then Malignaggi put down the world title to compete on November 22, 2008 compared Ricky Hatton ( 44-1 ) to the IBO World Championship. He was, however, punches from the more experienced British and lay back on points hopeless, why Malignaggis trainer Buddy McGirt threw in the towel in the eleventh round.

On 22 August 2009, he lost the battle for the North American Championship of the WBO disputed on points against Juan Diaz ( 34-2 ), but won the rematch on December 12, 2009 unanimously. On May 15, 2010, he boxed against Amir Khan (22-1 ) to the WBA world light welterweight in, but was impossible to block and was taken a severe battering in the eleventh round by the referee out of the fight.

Only after about seven months Malignaggi returned to the ring, beating Michael Lozada ( 36-6 ) early in the sixth round. In April 2011, he met Jose Cotto ( 32-2), the brother of his former adversary Miguel Cotto and won by unanimous decision. Even against the Mexicans Orlando Lora (28-1 ) as he could carry a unanimous points victory in October 2011.

On 29 April 2012, he fought against the undefeated title holder Vyacheslav Sentschenko ( 32-0, 21 Ko) by the WBA world welterweight. Here, the 1:4 underdog Malignaggi controlled the fight and completely defeated the Ukrainians in his hometown of Donetsk early in the ninth round. In October of the same year he played his first title defense against Mexican Pablo Cesar Cano ( 25-1 ) and won by majority decision.

In April 2013 he was to defend his title against Marcos Maidana ( 33-3 ), but the fight did not materialize. In June 2013 he lost his world title by a scant point defeat to Adrien Broner ( 26-0 ).
