Paulinho Santos

João Paulo Maio dos Santos ( born November 21, 1970 in Vila do Conde ), better known under the name Paulinho Santos, is a former Portuguese footballer, who played as a defensive midfielder.

Club career

Santos began his career in local club Rio Ave FC, and moved in 1992 to FC Porto, with whom he won seven league titles and five domestic cups. In Porto, he and four other players the only ones in the history of Portuguese football, who won five league titles in a row (1994-1999 ). As Porto in 2003 the UEFA Cup won, Santos was already only a reserve player. He finished his career after the season.

Santos was an aggressive player acting. So it was during his career, often for tangible João Vieira Pinto dispute with Benfica. As a symbolic gesture but both das Antas exchanged the jersey before the last game for Santos against Sporting Clube de Portugal ( where Pinto was playing at the time), at the Estádio in July 2003. Three years later he began a career as a coach, first at the youth team of Porto.

Since 14 February 2012, he is an assistant coach at FC Porto.

International career

Paulinho Santos took part in Portugal for 30 international matches and scored two goals (one of them alone in a 1:1 away match against Austria on 11 October 1995). His first game was on 19 January 1994 in a 2-2 draw in a friendly against Spain in Vigo, his last on 10 February 1999 in a 1-0 win against the Netherlands in Rotterdam ( also a friendly game ).

Santos participated in the European Football Championship in 1996 in part as a defensive player, at the European Football Championship 2000, he was unable to participate due to injury.
