A jewel in the crown is a Polish film from the year 1972.

Action

The film takes place mid-1930s in Silesia. The Polish miner Jaś works in a German mine. His wife Wichta pulls on the two small sons while he works in mining. When the German owners decide to close the mine because of their poor profitability, breaks out a strike of miners. Underground mining is to be flooded. The strikers occupy the mine and the families they serve, although the police seal off the mine sealed. As the miners go on a hunger strike, the solidarity families demonstrate in front of the mine. The demonstrations are violently suppressed by the police. But the miners continue to believe that they can save the bill. When the miners of the Directorate announce that they will not leave the studs even with a flood, it is still ultimately the positive agreement with the owners. Jaś leaves with his colleagues the bill and returns to his family.

Awards

The film was invited to the International Film Festival in Cannes in 1972, was at the award ceremony but left empty-handed. At the International Film Festival of Milan in 1972, the film was named best film of the Golden Globe.
