Pegnitz (river)

The Pegnitz as southern and eastern boundary of the Franconian Switzerland

While the Pegnitz takes about 15 minutes for the " runaround " of the seamount, the underground flow takes about 180 minutes

The Pegnitz ( with Fichtenohe ) is the almost 102 kilometers, right or eastern source of the river Regnitz in Franconia.

Name interpretation

The river Pegnitz name goes back to the 889 -to-find names " Paginza " and will be seen as an Indo-European derivation with a suffix -nt - bhog = running water. 1119 at the first mention of the town Pegnitz it is known as " Begenze " and find 1196 as " Begnitz " before the modern name is mentioned in 1329. In Franconia it is often called " Bengertz ".

Source and upper reaches

The source of the river Pegnitz is located in the town of Pegnitz on the eastern slope of the castle hill ( 543 m above sea level. ): From a position located on this mountain in 425 m altitude karst spring, the water of the river Pegnitz flows through the Pegnitzer city. However, the majority of the local Pegnitz water does not come from this source, but rises in the Lindenhardt forestry as Fichtenohe flowing direction Pegnitz and flows in the urban area in the short Bach der Pegnitz source.

Fichtenohe

The Fichtenohe is a 22.59 km long left tributary of the river Pegnitz. Some call Fichtenohe only as a secondary name in the upper reaches of the river Pegnitz. It rises in the Lindenhardt forest north of Lindenhardt near the A 9

The flowing down from there to the south Fichtenohe divided in Pegnitz in two arms. Although the opening into the time being only a few meters long Pegnitz right arm of the Fichtenohe already occurs quite handsome in Pegnitz, ie the stream only from here Pegnitz (49 ° 45 ' 26 " N, 11 ° 32' 18" O49.757311.53824 ).

Craimoosweiher

The Craimoosweiher is a nearly 15 -acre pond, which is located on the watershed of the Main and the river Pegnitz. The water from the projected nature Craimoosweiher flows from both north into the Red Main and south across the pond digging toward Pegnitz. Thus, the pond is not just a hydrographic feature, but also the origin of a circle closes again ultimately determined by the confluence of the Regnitz in the Main - a rather rare in Europe Gewässerbifurkation.

Creek crossing

Another special feature is a so-called stream crossing in a small park in Pegnitz, the meadow pond. There crosses under the substance that results from the division of the left arm Fichtenohe, the Mühlbach, the straight flowing Pegnitz (ie, his former right arm ) with the help of an underwater pipeline from left to right and flows on to the sea mount.

Underground Flow

On natural monument " Subterranean flow " flows around the Pegnitz the mountain of water in a wide arc, while the Fichtenohe disappears at the Rösch mill in the mountain. After 320 meters in a straight line the river occurs on the southern slope of the mountain again and turns finally to the Pegnitz. As the Fichtenohe flows inside the mountain, is unknown. Experiments with water angefärbtem revealed, however, that they on their winding paths through the underground Felsgeklüft about four times as much time as the above ground Pegnitz. The bed on the reemergence has now abated considerably, because at the turn of the century bubbled the water on the southern slope of the seamount probably still powerfully from the limestone. Besides this main exit point are still four to six other small pseudo sources known to those observed especially at high water after thunderstorms.

River

The Pegnitz flows in southern direction over Neuhaus and Velden by the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park Veldenstein forest and then through the Hersbrucker Switzerland over Hersbruck. Then the Pegnitz heads west over run and Nuremberg to Fürth. North Fürth town unites to 283 meters with the Rednitz to Regnitz.

Numerous bridges and footbridges cross the waters; inter alia, the iron suspension bridge ( chain bridge) from the year 1824. west of Maxbrücke there is a weir. In the western area of the river was renatured in several stages from 1998 to 2001; thereby oriented themselves to the historic river bed. There is also a bucket according to the historical model was built.
  • Fuerth: Numerous bridges and walkways are available. Within the project the shore town of Fürth ( transformation of the former Grundig headquarters to a business park ), the river in 2003 was placed in the eastern urban area in a semi-natural bed; over a length of one kilometer two new loops and flattened banks have been created. A part of the former riverbed was retained as oxbows. This measure was co-financed by the European Union.

History

At least since the Middle Ages is the Pegnitz a major economic artery for the region. The abundance of fish served the food supply and hydropower are used to power the mills.

After the great flood in February 1909 ( with an outflow of 370 m³ / s), the river was shortened by straightening the Nuremberg city area for about four kilometers.

Since 1996, plans and measures underway, the course of the river between Nuremberg and Fürth by grinding to extend again and thus make natural.

Education and Leisure

To the east of Nuremberg city core between Mögeldorf and hammer at Laufamholz the Water Authority Nuremberg has established the nature trail Pegnitztal East with over 20 stations. The path is visible in OpenStreetMap under

The Pegnitz has few rapids and weirs and can be ridden in some sections by canoe and kayak. Since 2012 Nuremberg may be re- crossed with small vessels without propulsion.
