Pehr Henrik Nordgren

Pehr Henrik Nordgren ( born January 19, 1944 in Saltvik, Åland, † 25 August, 2008 Veteli ) was a Finnish composer.

Life

Pehr Henrik Nordgren received violin lessons from 1958 in Helsinki and studied from 1962 to 1967 musicology at the university, and from 1965 to 1969 private Joonas Kokkonen composition with. At the University of Art and Music in Tokyo, he added 1970 to 1973 his composition studies with Yoshio Hasegawa and got to know the traditional Japanese music, which soon influenced his own work.

In 1973 he married in Tokyo Shinobu Suzuki, returned to Finland and settled in Kaustinen, a small town in Ostrobottnien as a freelance composer. Kaustinen is the center of folk music throughout Finland; to be held in the summer folk music days travel prospects from around the world. So Nordgren employed now for an intensely with the music of his country, on the other hand began working with the Ostrobottnischen Chamber Orchestra and its conductor Juha Kangas, which led to a wealth of works for string orchestra.

Nordgrens style comes from the twelve-tone technique as well as the clustering technique Ligeti, but involves many more elements and can be collectively referred to as pluralistic. In addition to the encounter with the traditional Japanese music (eg, in the Kwaidan Ballads I-II for piano) and the use of their instruments in his compositions played by the Finnish folk music with their instruments, especially the kantele, a major role. The focus of Nordgrens oeuvre, however, are the works for strings: Whether in solo concertos, works for string orchestra, string quartets or sonatas, Nordgren has coaxed them all moods and nuances, but especially the tragic and melancholic.
