Pelion railway

The Little Train of Pelion is a narrow gauge railway with a track width of 600 mm on the Pelion Peninsula in Thessaly, Greece.

History

Construction on this stretch of Thessaly Railways began in 1886. The first part of the track Volos -Agria was completed in 1892. 1896 reached the track Ano Lehonia. 1904, the work was completed to Milies on the last section and from then connected the route to the mountain village in the heart of Pelion Peninsula to the port town of Volos.

The entire railway is single track with passing places built in all stations and stops outside of Volos. The section within Volos was designed as a four- rail track so that trains from Larissa ( standard gauge ) and Kalambaka ( meter gauge ) were able to drive to the breakpoint Vlachava on the outskirts of Volos. Water cranes were in Agria, Ano Lehonia (still available) and Milies built. Turntables are available in Volos and Milies, the latter was replaced by locomotives procurement of Schöma by a larger one. In Agria and Ano Lehonia there is a track triangle for converting the locomotive.

Until the 1950s, the narrow-gauge railway between the stations Volos Hbf and Anavros also served as a tram. In 1951, the "Greek State Railways (SEK) " to operate the line.

Suspension of operations

After the dissolution of the SEC on December 31, 1970, the management of the route went to the newly founded " Hellenic Railways Organisation OSE". The railway line was shut down immediately for economic reasons, but not removed. Parts of the track were überasphaltiert in subsequent years, for example, the through-roads of Volos ( Dimitriados Street) and Lehonia and on those portions of the overland route between Agria and Ano Lehonia where the route runs adjacent to the coast road. The vehicles remained parked on site.

Museum Railway

In 1985, the railway was declared a national monument and the mountain range of Ano Lechonia to Milies by the "Association of Greek railway enthusiasts " reactivated. Since 1996 takes place regularly in this section Transport Museum for tourists.

The stretch of coast between Anavros on the outskirts of Volos and Agria since 2004 back in service. In the summer months the train runs every Saturday and Sunday mornings from Ano Lehonia, afternoon back of Milies.

Since 1999, two new Schöma - diesel locomotives are available that have been designed externally as " steam engines " for the historic features. The remaining operable steam locomotive is used for groups to order from Ano Lehonia.
