Pemmo of Friuli

Pemmo was 706-739 dux ( duke ) of the Lombard Duchy of Friuli.

Life

Pemmo was a son of Billo from the place Bellunum (Belluno), who had emigrated because of an uprising as Forum Julii ( Cividale ). Pemmo was married to Ratperga with whom he had sons Ratchis, Ratchait and Aistulf.

As the successor of the deposed Corvolus Pemmo was around 706 dux of Friuli. In his budget, he pulled the orphans of the fallen in the last war against the Slovaks Lombards on with his own sons.

When the Slavs invaded Lauriana Pemmo marched them with his now adult pupils. The Slavs suffered heavy losses while Pemmo ( supposedly) just a man lost before a peace treaty was concluded.

As the Patriarch of Aquileia, the exiled Bishop Callistus Amator by Julia Carniolan sales of Forum Julii, Pemmo intervened and captured the Patriarch Callistus. King Liutprand put it off Pemmo and handed the Dukat to 739 whose son Ratchis. Pemmo wanted to flee with his followers to the Slavs, but Ratchis could move the king to reconciliation. Pemmo was pardoned and his sons Ratchait and Aistulf, the other miscreants were incarcerated.

Pemmos another life is not known.

Ratchis donated in honor of his father Pemmo an altar. The inscription tells of the " famous and noble Pemmo ", who rebuilt the ruined John's Church, and enriched with many gifts.
