Per Nørgård

Per Nørgård ( born July 13, 1932 in Gentofte ) is a Danish composer.

Life and work

Per Nørgård studied with Vagn Holmboe and Finn Høffding, at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. In the years 1956 and 1957 he continued his studies with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

His compositional technique is strongly influenced by mathematical ideas. He developed a system which combines Spektralharmonik and based on the golden ratio rhythms with the so-called infinity series. The latter has the property that any compression and extension of this series to the series of even or their interval reflection is identical.

Works

Per Nørgård wrote two operas, among other things, the two violin and percussion concerts, the piano and cello concert, and so far eight symphonies and chamber music.

Some of his works were also used in Danish films, and he was also a film composer.
