Përmet ( Albanian: Përmeti; Greek Premeti Πρεμετή ) is a small town in southern Albania. The city has not quite 6,000 inhabitants ( 2011). As capital of the district of the same Përmet is also the local center in the southern Vjosatal.

Geography

Përmet is located on the Vjosa. Behind the town of Mali i Dhëmbelit ( 2,050 m), part of the Trebeshina - Dhëmbel - Nemërçka mountain range rises. From the road on the eastern shore of the Vjosa the city center can be reached only through a single bridge. The main square is just across the bridge. Situated on the riverfront, just below the bridge, is a huge, free-standing, cube-shaped rock rises. On the Gur i Qytetit (city - block ), there are still some ruins from the Ottoman era.

History

Oldest mentions of the town date from the 15th century. From the old town Përmetis only little remains. The Orthodox St. Nicholas Church ( Holy Evangelist Nikolle ) withstood all fires and communist atheism campaigns. Other important churches are to be found in the neighboring villages and Leusa Kosina.

A statue in the city center is reminiscent of Sami Frashëri and Rilindja movement, which in the southern Albanian mountains had one of their centers and was particularly supported by the Bektashi.

After the failed attack by the Italians on Greece in October 1940 Përmet was taken in December of Greek troops, and only in response to the German Balkan campaign ( April 1941 ) cleared again. In the course of World War II, the region was to Përmet a center of anti-fascist resistance. Italian Army and Wehrmacht have the city burned down several times. From the summer of 1943 succeeded the communist partisans to gain the upper hand in the southern Albanian mountains. They were among the first areas of the country without foreign occupation.

From 24 to 28 May 1944, the first anti-fascist congress of national liberation took place in Përmet. This Congress of Përmet, composed of 186 delegates from across the country, chose the composed of 118 persons Anti-Fascist Council of National Liberation ( Këshilli antifashist nacional çlirimtar ), a transitional parliament. It chose the 13-member Anti-Fascist National Liberation Committee under the leadership of Enver Hoxha, was allotted the powers of a transitional government and was renamed in October in Berat in Albania's democratic government. Since the Communists in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation Committee could take power, Përmet found in communist historiography considerable attention.

Economy

Përmet and the region are heavily reliant on agriculture. Përmet - also known as the city of roses - is famous for its wineries. The tragic death of seven young men during the lottery uprising has witnessed the economic depression after the collapse of communism. Gradually captures the region.
