Petar Stambolić

Petar Stambolić ( born July 12, 1912 in Brezova in Ivanjica (Serbia ); † 21 September 2007 in Belgrade ) was a Yugoslav politician.

Biography

He was a member from 1933 to the Communist Youth League, in 1935 the Communist Party of Yugoslavia. At the University of Belgrade, he completed a degree in agricultural science. During World War II he was a member of the General Staff of the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army in Serbia.

1945-1947 he was the Serbian Minister of Finance, 1947-1948 Yugoslav Minister of Agriculture and 1948-1953 Serbian Prime Minister. After that, he was President of the Serbian Parliament (1953-1957) and the German Federal Parliament (1957-1963), in the years 1963-1967 Yugoslav prime minister. In addition, he held a number of party offices in the League of Communists of Yugoslavia.

From 15 May 1982 to 15 May 1983, he was Chairman of the Presidium of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and thus was president.

He was awarded the Order of National Hero of Yugoslavia. Petar Stambolić was an uncle of the politician Ivan Stambolić ( 1936-2000 ).
