Peter Harper (geneticist)

Sir Peter Stanley Harper, CBE (* April 28 1939 in Barnstaple ) is a British geneticist and professor.

Life

Harper studied at the University of Oxford biology and medicine. He then worked at St Thomas' Hospital in London. This was followed by a research fellowship at the University of Liverpool with Cyril Clarke from 1967 to 1969 and a stay at the Johns Hopkins University under Victor McKusick 1969-1971. Upon his return to Britain in 1971 he moved to Cardiff at the Cardiff University School of Medicine, where he established the Medical Genetics. Until his retirement in October 2004 he was a professor at the College of Medical Genetics, since he is Research Professor of Human Genetics.

2004 Harper was given the title " Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire" ( CBE) awarded.

Peter Harper and his wife Elaine are the parents of five children.

Work

Harper's research is particularly interested in the clinical neurogenetics of Huntington's disease and myotonic dystrophy. He has published on these topics over 300 contributions to scientific journals as well as several monographs. In Wales, he was involved in the establishment of a comprehensive genetic counseling.

From 1999 to 2004, Harper Member of the Human Genetics Commission, from 2004 to 2010 he was a member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.

After his retirement to Harper employed reinforced with the history of genetics. He founded the Genetics and Medicine Historical Network and published several books on the subject.
