Peter Vaughan

Peter Vaughan ( born April 4, 1923 in Wem, Shropshire, England as Peter Ewart Olm ) is a British actor.

Life

Peter Vaughan grew up in Staffordshire. After his schooling, he played in local theaters before he performed his military service. From the mid- 1950s, he played small roles in British television productions. He often presented here represents police officers, including Ralph Thomas in The 39 Steps and in the horror film Village of the Damned. He played a first major role in 1962 in the television adaptation of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, in which he portrayed Bill Sikes. In 1967, he starred alongside Frank Sinatra, the second starring role in The Man on the wire, but a Hollywood career failed to materialize in the sequence. The following year, he starred in the television adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island pirate Long John Silver. In the 1970s he played mainly in television productions, from 1980, he received but again increasing roles in major film productions such as Time Bandits and Brazil by Terry Gilliam and literary films like The French Lieutenant's, What Remains of the Day and Les Misérables. 2011 Vaughan was recurrently seen in three episodes of the award-winning fantasy series Game of Thrones as Maester of the Night's Watch, Aemon Targaryen.

Vaughan is married to his second marriage to actress Lillias Walker. His first marriage to actress Billie Whitelaw in 1966 divorced. He has no children.
