Peter von Bemmel

Peter von Bemmel ( born August 18, 1685 in Nuremberg, † October 22, 1753 in Regensburg ) was a German landscape painter.

Life

He was born as the son of immigrants from Utrecht Willem Gerritsz van Bemmel landscape painter.

In painting he followed until about 1715 with his older brother Johann Georg the style of his late father in 1708. According to " Biography of all Bemmel " ( 1799) was not originally planned, it also train as a landscape painter. In 1715 he painted a landscape with city further, several churches and an ancient ruin, a borrowed from the father motif. 1716 a graphic sequence of him was published in Regensburg. Presumably he had then connected to the Regensburger landscape painter Christoph Ludwig Agricola ( 1665-1719 ).

Bemmel was often active in travel and for the princely courts of Ansbach, Bamberg and Würzburg. His family lived on Bonersberg ( Paniersplatz ) in Nuremberg, where his brother Johann Georg until his death in 1723 directed the workshop of his father.

Bemmel founded the younger Nuremberg landscape painter school. It differs from the older school of his father by giving up a single deep space and the highlighting of individual motifs. The enriched with small figures scenes also receive Christian symbolism by roadside crosses, chapels in the woods, hermit huts etc. This for older models - like Lucas van Valckenborch - composed landscapes can take on a dark character, even in the shade. Popular motifs are also crossing Birch, one lying on the ground stump and spiers with pointed pyramid roofs. The technical quality of his work is highly variable, as are eg the screens do not always primed properly. Nevertheless, they are usually signed.

He became known as " Gewitterbemmel ". In these predominantly small-scale weather landscapes he developed his talent. Typical are just struck by lightning on the ground and break-up of tree trunks that still glow. A heavy rain surprised, for example, Hikers on lonely roads. Even winter landscapes are known by him.

His sons Christoph and Johann Christoph and his grandchildren follow him sometimes, sometimes the older school after Willem van Bemmel, continue his brother Johann Georg and his descendants. Of students also his brother- Lindner is mentioned. The director of the Nuremberg school of drawing, Johann Daniel Preissler published " Guidance for Landscape Painting", which provide a theoretical definition of the range of variation of individual motifs in Bemmels oeuvre.
