Peter von Matt

Peter von Matt ( born May 20, 1937 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss German scholar and writer.

Life

Peter von Matt grew up in Stans on in Nidwalden. He studied German, English and art history in Zurich and Nottingham received his doctorate with Emil Staiger on Franz Grillparzer. In 1970 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on ETA Hoffmann.

From 1976 to 2002 taught by Matt as Professor of Modern German Literature at the University of Zurich. In 1980 he was a visiting professor at Stanford University in California and 1992/1993 Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study Berlin.

By Matt is a member of the Order Pour le Mérite for Arts and Sciences, the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt, the Saxon Academy of Arts and the Academy of Arts in Berlin.

Regularly by Matt is a contributing writer for the Frankfurter anthology. Marcel Reich -Ranicki had discovered him for this. 1998 was the first winner of Matt founded in 1974 anthology.

Peter von Matt is married to the literary critic Beatrice von Matt Albrecht and lives with her ​​since 1975 in Dübendorf near Zurich.
