Petřín

Petrin ( German Laurenziberg ) is a 327 m nm high hill in the western center of the Czech capital Prague. It lies on the left bank of the Vltava River.

Description

The almost completely forested hills is one of the favorite recreational areas the population of Prag and on this there are many historic buildings and sights. Here the small St. Lawrence Church was built in the Middle Ages, which was remodeled in the 18th century in the Baroque style. Under the reign of Charles IV was a Gothic fortification wall ( Hunger Wall ).

On the occasion of the Jubilee Exhibition in 1891 a funicular and a historic maze of mirrors were added. Both are still in operation and can be visited. Also, the Petrin lookout tower (stairs with 60 meters in altitude) was built for the same reason. He is a scaled replica of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and is regarded as a visible symbol of the city from afar. This tower provides a comprehensive view of Prague and the surrounding area.

The Laurenziberg mentioned The Unbearable Lightness of Being, both in Franz Kafka's short story describing a struggle, as well as in Milan Kundera's novel.

Traffic

The connection between the Prague district of Malá Strana and the highest point of near the city center located in the western hill runs until today opened the 1891 Petrin funicular.
