Petru Gherghel

Petru Gherghel ( born June 28, 1940 in Gherăeşti, Neamt county, Romania) is a Roman Catholic priest and in 1990 Bishop of Iaşi.

Life

Petru Gherghel attended the seminary in Iasi received on 29 June 1965 the Bishop of Alba Iulia Aron Marton the sacrament of Holy Orders. After a time he was chaplain on November 1, 1970 professor at the seminary in Iasi and on March 1, 1970 its rector.

On February 21, 1978, Pope Paul IV appointed by decree of the Congregation for Bishops Ordinarius ad nutum Sanctae Sedis cum munere administratoris apostolicis of the Diocese of Iaşi. He sat for the training of priests, and he succeeded, almost 150 priests to send abroad to study.

From 1978-1990 Gherghel was Apostolic Administrator of Iaşi.

After the end of the Ceauşescu era and the normalization of the ecclesiastical situation, Pope John Paul II appointed him on 14 March 1990 as Bishop of Iaşi. The ex officio proceedings in the Vatican Secretariat of State Curia Archbishop Angelo Sodano gave him on 1 May of the same year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Bucharest, Ioan Robu, and the Bishop of Münster, Reinhard Lettmann. On August 15, 1990 Bishop Peter Gherghel laid the foundation stone of the new cathedral Sfânta Maria Regina ( "Mary Queen " ) which he could inaugurate a ceremony on 1 November 2005.
