Petrus Houttuyn

Peter Hotton ( born June 18, 1648 Amsterdam, † January 10, 1709 in Leiden was a Dutch physician and botanist.

Life

Peter Hotton came from a family who had come from France to Holland, his father was pastor of the Reformed Church. Medical studies completed Hotton in Leiden and received his PhD in 1672. The title of his doctoral thesis was positiones quaedam medicae. After his studies, Hotton turned to botany and undertook a study tour to Denmark. He then returned to Leiden, where he from 1672 to 1678 the botany professor Paul Hermann took while this worked in Java and Ceylon. According to Hermann return Hotton was botanist of the Amsterdam Hortus Medicus. As Hoffmann died in 1695, Hotton received the Leiden Department of Botany and retained it until his death in 1709.

Ehrentaxon

His successor, Professor of Botany Hermann Boerhaave, named in his honor the plant genus of the water springs as Hottonia. This name was also adopted by Carl Linnaeus.
