Tansy Phazelie ( Phacelia tanacetifolia )

The tansy Phazelie ( Phacelia tanacetifolia ) is a species of the genus Phacelia in the family Boraginaceae ( Boraginaceae ). This type is a skin irritant.

Features

The tansy Phazelie is an annual plant that reaches the plant height of 20 to 120 centimeters. The stem is covered with long protruding and short fluffy hair. The leaves are not white -haired. The inflorescence is almost trugdoldig. The crown is blue. The Kronröhrenbasis has 10 on the base of the stamens in pairs intergrown, more or less crescent-shaped scales.

Ecology

The tansy Phazelie is an important nectar and pollen source. When visitors come to bumble bees, honey bees, wild bees, butterflies and hoverflies. Bloom time is from June to October.

The two -column capsule fruits jump on easily and dismiss the very light, orange- like seeds that have a warty surface. The seeds are dark germinator.

Toxicity

As is known from U.S., tansy Phazelie can lead to significant contact allergies. The reason for this is the group of substances Phacelioide. As the strongest Kontakttallergen this group proved to be the Geranylbenzochinon; but also the Geranylhydrochinon and Farnesylhydrochinon sensitize strong. BM Hausen has, however, in thin-layer chromatographic studies of plants in Central Europe and not only detect small amounts of Phacelioiden in the seeds can be used in the green parts of plants. Probably also influence at this plant climate and site conditions, the allergen production.

Occurrence

The tansy Phazelie comes in California, Arizona and Mexico before on dry, rocky slopes at altitudes of 2000 meters.

Use

The tansy Phazelie is used both as an ornamental and as a crop. As an ornamental plant it is scattered cultivated in summer discounts. On crop it is scattered, so isolated, field by field grown as bee pasture, forage crop or green manure. The species is in cultivation since 1832.
