Philibert de Gramont

Philibert de Gramont (* 1621, † January 30, 1707 ), since 1679 comte de Toulongeon, was a French officer, court, and nobleman at the court of Louis XIV, he was primarily known for his love of adventure and left memoirs, which is a valuable image passed from court life in the 17th century.

Life

Philibert was the son of Antoine II de Gramont and a younger half-brother of Marshal Antoine III. de Gramont.

He entered the army, initially served under Condé, to whose party he belonged during the Fronde, and then under Marshal Turenne. In England he married Elizabeth Hamilton, daughter of Sir George Hamilton, 1st Baronet of Donalang, and granddaughter of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Abercorn, with which he returned in 1664 to France. After he had again reconciled with the French court, he accompanied the King in 1668 in the Franche -Comté, 1672 in the Netherlands and participated in the siege of Maastricht, Cambrai and Namur.

The Count of Toulongeon, his brother Henri ( † 1679 ), made ​​him an heir and the king made ​​him a Lieutenant General ( Lieutenant General ) of Bearn. This dignity appeared Gramont later from his cousin, the Marquis de Feuquieres.

Gramont died at the age of 86.
