Philip B. Crosby

Philip Bayard Crosby ( born June 18, 1926 in Wheeling, West Virginia; † August 18, 2001 in Winter Park, Florida) was next to Joseph M. Juran and W. Edwards Deming one of the great " quality gurus" in management.

Crosby began his career as Director of Quality at International Telephone and Telegraph ( ITT) and was awarded the early 60s from the U.S. Department of Defense for the design of zero-defect program.

This program aimed to introduce people as closely as possible to the goal of perfection. The occurrence of faults in the product may not be considered normal. The analysis of the cause and the initiation of corrective measures should help to reduce the occurrence of errors in work activity.

Furthermore, Crosby was intensely occupied with the aspects of quality cost and quality control.

Crosby's approach

Crosby sat consideration to the costs. He defined quality as " free " ( also the title of his book 1979: Quality is free ~ quality does not cost anything ). His approach is best described by its four principles of quality:

Crosby also brought the idea into the world of management that quality is a responsibility of management and not a program. He suggested (probably in response to Deming's 14 points) 14 steps for improving quality before:

Many of the issues and allegations Crosby have expanded the tag collection of management. This should not obscure the fact that his four principles and the introduction of 14 points assignable findings are based and through them - if taken seriously - radical improvements can be achieved. One must not overlook the fact that most companies have to change their culture from the ground up to meet this demand and this is an absolutely non-trivial problem.
