Philippe Barbarin

Philippe Xavier Christian Ignace Marie Barbarin Cardinal ( born October 17, 1950 in Rabat, Morocco) is Archbishop of Lyon and Primate of France.

Life

Philippe Barbarin studied in Paris at various universities, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He has a degree in theology and a doctorate of philosophy. In 1977 he received the Sacrament of Holy Orders and was used in the next eight years as vicar in Alfortville and Vincennes. From 1985 to 1990 he worked as a pastor and teacher in Saint -Maur. At the same time he knew the task of the Diocesan Representative on the ecumenical movement. From 1991 to 1994 he was pastor in Boissy -Saint -Léger from 1994 to 1998, he taught at the seminary of Vohitsoa in Madagascar and at the same time perceived pastoral tasks.

1998 Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of the diocese of Moulins. Shortly after, he caused a stir with a newspaper interview in which he introduced the compulsory celibacy for priests in question. In 2002 he became the successor of Louis -Marie Billé Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lyon and at the same time carries with it the title of " Primate of the Gauls ".

The College of Cardinals is one of Philippe Barbarin since 21 October 2003 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santissima Trinità al Monte Pincio on. He participated in the conclave Conclave 2005 and 2013.
